All Hands Volunteers, Project Minot

Minot? Why Not!

I was settling in to life in Missouri quite nicely. I had a nice routine of sleeping in, eating too much and forcing Neil to endure hours of The Real Housewives of New York. Then I got a call. “Can you help out in North Dakota for a few weeks before you go back to Japan?” You’d have thought I’d have learned by now not to make plans – not as I had any beyond more eating, more sleeping and more awful TV!

Coming in to land yesterday we flew low over the flooded area. Although the flood water has receded I saw several homes and farms sitting in the middle of newly formed ponds. I got stuck in as soon as I arrived in the coordination center, filing and organizing the 700+ work requests.

In some places the water was over the roof of single story residences, almost all have basements full of muck and mud. The major issue right now is accommodation for volunteers; the five of us who are here with All Hands are living in a Church 25 miles out of town. Fingers crossed we’ll find somewhere to put everyone as numbers start ramping up on Monday …

About Jess UK

Fell in love with the crazy, inspiring, all-or-nothing world of disaster response and the wonderfully ridiculous, hard-working people who are drawn to it. Currently working in the Philippines as part of the recovery efforts after Typhoon Washi/Sendong! Want to know more? Check out disasterchasers.wordpress.com.
