Just back from the emergency room, that’s A&E to my British readers, but don’t panic, the volunteer in question has now had his wound cleaned up and patched and is safely back on base. Obviously the work we do can be hazardous but the assessment team and team leaders do everything they can to mitigate these risks, from checking that homes have been inspected by the city before allowing volunteers to go to a site to giving a safety briefing specifically relating to the particular work site every morning before anyone lifts so much as a bucket.
In this case a small but deep cut seemed to be causing problems much later in the day than it should have so a quick trip to get it looked at was in order. Highlight of the evening was the vending machine pharmacy that the prescription was obtained from after all the gory stuff was done. I would say “only in America” but it’s been a while now since I’ve been home so who knows they might have them back in Blighty by now.
