Earthquake Today: All Is Well on Project CDO

A magnitude 6.8 earthquake has struck the Philippines today. The quake shook most of the Visayas region, with the epicenter located underwater between Cebu and Negros islands. Here in CDO we felt a slight swaying of the house, around a I or II on the MMI scale. This is similar to the feeling when a truck passes close to a building you’re in. There are no reports of damage this far south and we are looking into information just starting to come out of locations closer to the event. So, no need to panic, mums!

Re: I think the earthquake that passed CDO at almost 12:00 p.m., Feb. 6, 2012, particularly in our area is not just magnitude 1 or 2. According to MMI scale, the magnitude at which hanging objects are swayed is equivalent to 3… That’s what we have felt in our area! I thought I am out of balance but then I realized that I am not the only one moving but also the objects I hung… Maybe you’re measuring earthquake magnitude by one degree less than the actual… It’s scary!

    • Hi Freddie, the MMI scale is objective so even people in two houses next to each other might rate an earthquake at different levels. I’m sure many people felt this tremor more strongly than we did. I know it was a serious event, I was just trying to reassure the loved ones of all our volunteers that everyone here on Project CDO is alright. We are looking into the damage reports to see if there is any assistance we can provide but haven’t seen anything to suggest that the event has overwhelmed the capacity of local systems and organizations. Glad to hear you are ok too!
